This clasp carries no hallmark, which is normal for findings of this kind. The 18 carat composition has been confirmed by XRF testing rather than inferred from a mark.
About the Piece
A generous round bolt ring with a smooth heavy profile and a small lug on the back for attaching. At 20 mm it is considerably larger than the bolt rings usually found on modern chains, which is exactly why they are worth hunting for.
The spring is the part that fails on old clasps, and this one is strong. The gate opens fully against the spring and snaps closed cleanly with no lag or stickiness.
Solid gold bolt rings in this size are genuinely hard to find. Most survivors are small, or gold filled, or have a tired spring. This one is none of those.
Styling
Wear it at the front of a chain as a deliberate feature, where a large gold ring reads as part of the design rather than as a fastening. It will carry a charm or a pendant directly, join two chains, or work as the clasp on an antique chain that has lost its own.
