A Late Victorian ruby and diamond dress ring set in opulent, 18K yellow gold. The English ring is clearly stamped for the year 1908, making this ring 116 years old this year! The gemstones are all original to the ring: a .50 carat natural center ruby, two flanking rubies (.12 carat each), and two old mine cut diamonds (approx. .10 carat each). This side view showcases the claw-like prongs that loop up to hold each gem in place. This style is known as a half hoop ring. You can also see the hallmarks on the rings in one of the photos. These unique markings reveal the fineness of the metal, the place the piece was assayed as well as the year it was made. In this case, we have a crown with the number 18, a shield bearing the towns arms, a sword and three sheaves of wheat and a cursive letter H three symbols that indicate that the metal used was 18-karat gold; the second is the symbol for the Chester Assay Office and the letter tells us that the ring was made in 1908.
This style was very popular in late 19th early 20th century. These are exceptionally beautiful and solid, substantial pieces of jewelry which are very wearable on a daily basis. Such a ring could be enjoyed as an engagement ring, a dress ring or even added to your existing ring collection as an unusual eternity ring with further color or glitter. Each one-of-a-kind ring displays delicate details, carved by hand, and are true pieces of English history, showcasing the very best of English design and craftsmanship from over a century ago.
