A striking example of Alvin Yellowhorse's highly individual approach to jewelry, this monumental ring brings together Darling Darlene turquoise, sugilite, sterling silver, and 18K gold in a composition that rewards inspection from every angle.
Purchased new directly from Alvin Yellowhorse, the ring features stones identified by the artist himself: a generously proportioned Darling Darlene turquoise cabochon with expressive matrix and a triangular sugilite cabochon displaying rich purple and pink coloration. Alvin cut both stones himself.
The settings demonstrate the same attention to construction. The bezels are 18K gold—confirmed by Alvin and by XRF testing—with sterling silver backing carefully positioned beneath the bezel. This recessed construction allows the gold to define the visible profile surrounding the stones rather than interrupting it with an exposed silver edge.
Between the two stones is an extraordinary sculptural passage inspired by the twisted metalwork found in Yellowhorse's bracelet designs. Notched sections of triangular wire are twisted to bring the cut surfaces outward, producing a dimensional succession of projecting forms and textured surfaces.
Even the shank is treated as an integral part of the composition. Formed in sterling silver, it is stamped and flared outward, transitioning from approximately 0.40 inch to 0.70 inch wide and providing both visual and structural balance to the elongated face.
The result is unmistakably a statement piece: 2.34 inches long, approximately 0.85 inch wide, and weighing 38 grams. Despite the abundance of detail, each element has been considered as part of the whole—from the geometry of the shank to the contrasting stones and the warm gold framing their color.
