Antique 18k Gold Albert Chain Necklace | 1921 Birmingham Hallmarked Watch Chain, Heavy Curb Link, 60.1g Solid Gold T-Bar Necklace
$10,165.00
An extraordinary antique 18k gold Albert chain from Birmingham, 1921–1922, measuring 16.5 inches and weighing a substantial 60.1 grams. Every component is original and crisply marked: the T-bar carries 18, the crown (gold standard mark), the anchor (Birmingham assay office), and the maker’s mark “B&S.” Each dog clip is stamped 18, crown, and B&S, and every curb link is individually struck “18” with a crown. One link bears the anchor and date letter “W” confirming 1921–1922 Birmingham assay. This chain has a stationary T-Bar.
Historical Significance
Known as an “Albert” (after Prince Albert), these chains began as practical watch guards in the Victorian era and evolved into enduring symbols of status. By the early 20th century, heavy 18k examples—especially fully hallmarked English pieces—were luxury items. The British hallmarking system is one of the world’s strictest:
• Crown + “18” = gold of 18 carat standard (pre-1975 format).
• Anchor = Birmingham Assay Office.
• Date letter “W” = 1921–1922.
• Maker’s mark “B&S” = the registered Birmingham maker’s punch used on quality chains of the period.
Together, these marks document origin, fineness, and date—turning the chain into a portable historical record as well as a jewel.
About the Links (Why this chain feels so good on)
This is the classic close curb link executed in solid 18k (not hollow). The links are thick, rounded, and tightly aligned, giving the chain:
• Weight and drape: at 60.1g, it sits with that supple, expensive “roll” only solid high-karat curb can achieve.
• Comfort: rounded edges and uniform curvature glide across the neckline.
• Strength: solid links with soldered joins make it durable for everyday wear.
• Assurance: individual link hallmarks were a premium practice on finer English chains—time-consuming to apply and a strong indicator of quality and originality.
Wear & Style
At 16.5”, it lands near the collarbone for most necks. The T-bar can be worn front-and-center for a classic Albert look or turned to the back for a sleek curb-only profile. The dog clips are both functional and decorative; you can clasp them together, clip a locket or pendant, or attach charms for a personal twist.

XRF results:
We use an XRF (X-ray fluorescence) analyzer. It does not damage the jewelry—it simply shines a safe beam onto the surface and measures what elements are present and in what percentages. This allows us to confirm whether the chain is really 18k gold. The test showed about 75% gold, which is right where we expect 18k to be. The balance was mostly copper and silver, which are common alloy metals used in 18k gold chains. Small variations (for example, 74% or 76%) are normal and within tolerance. XRF measures the surface layer of the chain. If the piece is solid gold, the reading reflects the true composition. If the piece were plated, the test might only pick up the plating metal, so we always look at the numbers closely to be sure.
If you order with us, you will get a copy of the XRF results.
